How to differentiate between OLT, ONU, ODN, and ONT in optical access networks?

 

 

Optical access network uses light as the transmission medium, replacing copper wires to connect each household. An optical access network generally consists of three parts: the Optical Line Terminal (OLT), the Optical Network Unit (ONU), and the Optical Distribution Network (ODN). Among these, OLT and ONU are the core components of the optical access network.

​What is OLT?​
OLT stands for Optical Line Terminal. The OLT is the telecom central office end equipment used to connect the fiber trunk line. Its role is equivalent to a switch or router in a traditional communication network, acting as a device for the external network entry point and the internal network egress/ingress point. It is placed at the central office. Its most important functions are traffic scheduling, buffer control, and providing the user-facing Passive Optical Network (PON) interface while allocating bandwidth. Simply put, it performs two main functions: upstream, it provides access for the PON network; downstream, it sends the acquired data through the ODN network to distribute it to all ONU user terminal devices.

 

​What is ONU?​
ONU stands for Optical Network Unit. The ONU has two main functions: it selectively receives broadcasts sent by the OLT, and if it needs to receive specific data, it responds to the OLT; it collects and buffers Ethernet data that users need to send, and transmits this buffered data to the OLT side during its assigned transmission window.
In different FTTx (Fiber To The X) deployment scenarios, the ONU installation location varies:

FTTC (Fiber To The Curb): ONU is placed in a street cabinet or curb-side cabinet.

FTTB (Fiber To The Building): ONU is placed in a building's wiring closet or junction box.

FTTH (Fiber To The Home): ONU is placed within the home user's premises.

 

​What is ONT?​
ONT stands for Optical Network Terminal. It is the end unit in FTTH, commonly known as the "optical modem," similar to the "modem" in xDSL technology. The ONT is the optical network terminal device at the end-user location, whereas ONU refers to the optical network unit, which might have other network elements between it and the final end-user. The ONT is a part of the ONU (or, in FTTH scenarios, the ONU at the home is the ONT).

 

​What is the relationship between ONU and OLT?​
The OLT is the management end, while the ONU is the terminal (client) end. The provisioning of services on the ONU is all done through configuration sent down from the OLT; they have a master-slave relationship. One OLT can connect to multiple ONUs through an optical splitter.

 

​What is ODN?​
ODN stands for Optical Distribution Network. It is the physical optical transmission channel between the OLT and the ONUs. Its primary function is to accomplish the bidirectional transmission of optical signals. The ODN typically consists of optical fiber cables, optical connectors, optical splitters (the most important component), and the supporting equipment used to install and connect these devices.
